It's not uncommon during a family photography session for children to be apprehensive, shy and not in the mood for a stranger to take photos of them.  I never force any photos and if that means waiting forty-five minutes for the child to warm up, then so be it.  I will try and sneak some photos of the apprehension for posterities sake, but for the most part I will go on doing photos with the rest of the family and act as if nothing out of the ordinary is going on.  Once they see positive rapport with the rest of the family they tend to ease into the photos.  I don't make a big deal about them getting involved and I think they appreciate that.  All is well that ends well.  This session at Oak Canyon Nature Center was the epitome of the situation I just described and you can see the progression of mood throughout the post.
